Great car, except for the 17-18 MPG average. It's my second car that I got a few months after my Miata was totaled. A pretty big change from the Miata. Auto, unfortunately, but a really smooth one. I plan on doing a manual swap, whenever the auto craps out.

Dude you average 17-18 MPG in your bimmer?

That's not bad, that's amazing!

If you think that's bad make sure to never buy an M car, unless it's a new turbo charged one...

just how good is the auto?

I drive an auto E90 328i and it is NICE but I wanna get a manual, and I've found a few E34 wagons near me that are autos but I'd do a manual conversion asap.

Sport mode downshifts hard enough to shake your fillings out. It also holds gears till about 4k when not under throttle, 5-6k when under throttle. The standard mode feels nearly seamless.

Also, good luck finding a manual. They're apparently very popular with the drifters.

Impress your friends! And confuse people who don't realise it doesn't slide all the way open.

I'm averaging 17.8 in my e39M, I presume the E60 is worse, but are the M3s not better?

Sounds a lot like my E90. Such a great auto transmission, very fun to drive but also smooth enough for those times I just want to enjoy the drive.

Luckily finding a transmission isn't too hard to find.

Interesting. I tried an E90 335i convertible before buying my 135is DCT. The Steptronic was...ok, but not as responsive in manual mode as I wanted. Which is why I went for the DCT.

335i uses a different transmission than the 328i. When I bought the car I "reset" the transmission so it would learn my driving style, and then I got an alpina flash to quicken the steptronic shifts and make regular driving even smoother.

Wow that's pretty good!

I'm averaging 14-15 in the E46 M3 and 10-13 in the E90 M3. But I do have more city driving than most people do. Very little highway these days.

The N/A M3s have high strung engines that rev to the moon. Very fun, but the opposite of what you want for good fuel economy

I mean, they think it opens all the way, kind of like the Fiat 500 'Vert. Only part way on both sides.
